GPS is free, buy the unit and turn it on and it will tell you where you are how to get to where you are going.
Are you talking about a traffic subscription, which alerts you of traffic in a specific area and provides alternate routes…?

I have a Magellan.
There is no monthly fee. You turn it on, you type in where you want to go, and it directs you.
