THis looks like a great golf GPS, but their list of courses is very short. Make sure you check befoe you purchase this product, that your course is indeed supported. I do not own the unit nor have I seen it. But I play golf a 5 courses in VA, and 1 in Oregon and none are listed here.

Out of the box the Garmin Approach seemed like a nice unit. I connected to my PC and updated the software without a problem. But before I managed to get it to a golf course it would not power on any more. I had only had it for 5 days. I called Garmin tech support who were easy to reach and tried to be helpful, but the end result was they wanted me to either send it to them and wait 30 days or so for repair, or return/exchange it through Amazon. I chose to return it and I picked up the Callaway Upro which I like very much.

When you get it working it is very nice. However, unit doesn’t seem to be able to know where it is. It defaults to last area I was in playing golf. I have to find course via search in preview mode and if i can find it it then suddenly knows I’m in a new place. Instuctions assume it does know where it is so this is a flaw. Makes it frustrating to use many times.

Bought the Approach G5 April 29. It just stopped working. Called Garmin support and told to hold 15 to 20 minutes or use web site. Went to web site and tried to leave email, but that;s impossible as you must select product line and product, but th G5 Approach is NOT an option. Keep getting message “please choose product” Have been a big fan of Garmin, starting about 15 years ago wit Aviation GPS. Have been using NUVI and Approach, but, eith thei r idea of customer service, I’ve had my last Garmin product!!! BUYER BE WARE!!!
UPDATE: Responded almost immediately to email. Tried to get it working and finally supplied RMA number. Sent back on 10/3/2009, and I’ll update when repair is received! SO FAR SO GOOD!

The Garmin Approach G5 is a great GPS unit that has proven to be quite accurate. I especially like the capability to touch the screen to find the distance to a point on the fairway and also see the distance from that point to the green. The problem I have is the lack of support from Garmin on requesting additional golf courses. Its been a couple of months since the product came out and they still do not have a download site!! I would not recommend purchasing this product until Garmin provides the download site for additional courses.
