GPS (Global Positioning System) car navigation systems are now being manufacturer fitted (or has space to be fitted) to many mid to upper price cars, but the standalone portable navigation device (PND) is still going strong despite a somewhat crowded market. The GPS-enabled personal ’smart’ phones with navigation applications are being shown interest, yet are still lacking when compared to the more conventional, dedicated portables from TomTom, Garvin, Navman and others.
The amount of detail that your satnav will give you is probably related to the price you want to pay for extra features or essential features you have a real use for in your day to day business. In getting from point A to point B quickly and safely-features such as audible driving directions with text-to-speech (TTS), spoken street names, real-time traffic updates, internet connectivity for points-of-interest search and large easy-to-read screens are all there to aid you.
Hints in Selecting Your GPS Car or Motorbike Navigation System
Primarily, you must decide exactly why and how you are going to use your device as this will dictate and narrow down your choice amongst the many GPS. Don’t pay for gadgets that sound exciting, but in reality you will probably never use.
If you only want a GPS for use occasionally such as visits to out of town locations or annual driving holidays to a holiday destination, then one of the lower price sat navs with basic features (which can be quite alot as the market evolves), should visually and audibly direct and inform you adequately and probably all you need. This (as most of the devices) can be powered from the car utility socket and also disconnected and stored in your pocket and used for finding your way around a town or city on foot! Select a system that features multiple ways of getting to your destination. This can include by address, by intersection, by a personal address book or via a location selected directly from the map.
If you drive about during the day for sales or business relationships in multiple locations and have to drive through towns and cities and the traffic encountered – then your satellite navigation system should have speed camera and real time traffic alerts and re-route recommendations in addition to the normal basic specifications.
If you may be asked to travel worldwide or nationally on a regular basis, then you are going to be looking for all the previous specifications in a compact and easily carried device, plus internet connectivity, multimedia and voice recognition technology. Most GPS systems already include locations of airports and other transportation services, ATMs and banks, restaurants, hotels and a host of other sites.
When you have decided on all the specifications that you think you will need and have identified one or two suitable GPS system – then price the units out from several sources. Most electical or electronice retailers will have demonstration units in-store that you can see, touch, and experience and you can always check online retailers or GPS manufacturers for a better price. Don’t forget about eBay auctions from people who no longer need their units or are upgrading, or have devices in stock that have been superseded.
